A recent peer-reviewed study showed that the electron beam used to image a sodium solid-state electrolyte does not damage it by radiolysis, but by electrostatic charging, so cryogenic cooling gave no benefit. The charged beam also drove highly mobile sodium ions out of the framework and nucleated sodium metal crystals on the opposite side, producing a fresh electrolyte–sodium interface equivalent to the first deposition in an anode-free sodium cell. The interface showed no reacted SEI β€” which explains how a sodium solid-state cell can operate for long periods without losing capacity. The preprint connects the finding to ARBOK-SODIQ, a sodium-ion cell built on a TEGA anode (2,400 mΒ²/g, 0.43–0.60 nm interlayer spacing, 3.1 V, 150–175 Wh/kg, up to 500,000 cycles in surface mode), and outlines an anode-free direction in which a TEGA layer on the current collector provides the nucleation surface for sodium.
