LAVA-Dynamo (Liquid Conductor Generator)

LAVA-Dynamo is a compact 1 kW generator that replaces conventional copper windings with a circulating conductive liquid.

Overview

LAVA-Dynamo is a compact 1 kW generator that replaces conventional copper windings with a circulating conductive liquid. There are no moving parts except the liquid itself.

The stator is an array of slender tubes filled with a proprietary liquid-metal conductor chosen for its favorable combination of electrical conductivity and low toxicity — a materially safer alternative to mercury-based conductors used in legacy designs. A stationary permanent-magnet assembly establishes a shaped magnetic field whose intensity varies along the tube array. Because the tubes are arranged as chords within that field, the circulating conductor continuously crosses zones of differing magnetic intensity, inducing a usable electrical potential that is drawn off at the tube ends.

The design position is deliberately unfashionable: simple materials, nineteenth-century physics, assemblable in a workshop rather than a clean room.

Applications

Distributed and off-grid power generation at 1 kW scale. Workshop and small-series manufacture where clean-room fabrication is unavailable.

Scaling by increasing tube count, field strength or flow speed.

Operating Principle

The liquid-metal conductor is continuously circulated through the tube array by a small pump, at a flow rate tuned to the field geometry to maximize induced potential. A stationary permanent-magnet assembly establishes a shaped field with intensity varying along the tube length, so the moving conductor is continuously exposed to changing magnetic conditions, inducing a usable electrical potential across the assembly.

Perforated electrodes close the circuit onto the external load. The circulation pump also serves a secondary function of clearing any gas bubbles that could otherwise interrupt conduction.

The circulation pump's parasitic power draw is the dominant loss in the system; resistive heating in the tubes is a secondary, comparatively minor loss.

Key Parameters

| Parameter | Value |

| Stator | array of slender conductive tubes, sized to the target output |

| Working fluid | proprietary liquid-metal conductor, low-toxicity, higher conductivity than legacy mercury-based alternatives |

| Circulation | continuous, driven by a small pump tuned to the field geometry |

| Magnetic field | shaped, stationary permanent-magnet assembly with intensity varying along the tube array |

| System footprint | compact, sub-metre scale |

| Claimed efficiency | ~99.9% (see Risk Factors — pending independent verification) |

| Dominant loss | pump parasitic draw; tube resistive heating is a minor secondary loss |

Estimated total cost — approximately €13,600 for the complete 1 kW unit (working fluid, tube array, magnet assembly, pump and assembly combined).

Architecture and Components

An array of conductive tubes, arranged as chords within a shaped magnetic field produced by a stationary permanent-magnet assembly with intensity varying along the array; a proprietary liquid-metal working fluid circulated by a small pump that also handles bubble removal; and perforated electrodes that close the circuit onto the external load. The complete assembly is compact, sub-metre in scale, and built from simple, readily sourced materials throughout.

Advantages

Simplicity: no moving parts except the liquid, giving higher reliability than a classical generator with rotating windings and bearings.

Materials: the working fluid is a low-toxicity liquid-metal conductor, materially safer than legacy mercury-based approaches; the assembly is more compact than an equivalent copper-wound generator.

Manufacturability: assemblable in a workshop — no ultra-clean laboratory, no exotic fabrication, simple materials and nineteenth-century physics.

Scalability: output rises with tube count, field strength or flow speed.

Cost: complete bill of materials at approximately €13,600 for the 1 kW unit.

Deployment & Operation

Deployment follows conventional distributed-generation practice: unit fabrication, on-site installation, and commissioning of the circulation and control system, with maintenance limited to periodic inspection of the pump and fluid containment.

Design intent is workshop-level assembly and small-scale distributed deployment; operation requires only the circulation pump.

TRL

TRL 3 — assigned by Michael, 2026-08-06.

The source gives a complete design with dimensions, materials and a costed bill of materials, but records no prototype, no measurement and no test data.

Market Potential

Distributed and off-grid power generation is a growing segment as demand rises for resilient, locally deployable generation that does not depend on complex supply chains or specialized fabrication facilities. A workshop-buildable design suited to small-series manufacture broadens the addressable base beyond conventional industrial generator supply chains, particularly in regions with limited access to advanced manufacturing infrastructure.

Typical Project Economics

Bill of materials approximately €13,600 for a complete 1 kW unit. Operating cost is dominated by the parasitic power draw of the circulation pump against gross output.

Risk Factors

The stated efficiency claim and the documented loss estimate do not fully reconcile: independently summing the recorded loss contributors implies a total loss closer to roughly one-tenth of rated output, not the near-total efficiency claimed. The source records both figures without reconciling them; this discrepancy must be resolved through independent measurement before the efficiency claim is relied upon externally.

No prototype, measurement or test data is recorded — the design exists on paper with a costed bill of materials. Handling, containment and long-term material compatibility of the working fluid with the tube assembly are not yet addressed. Scaling behaviour beyond the 1 kW reference design is asserted rather than demonstrated.
