Overview
ARBOK-PHOSPHOGYPSUM converts hazardous phosphogypsum waste into clean, market-ready calcium sulfate while safely isolating radioactive and toxic impurities. Using a controlled water-column density separation (not chemical washing, not vacuum), it separates usable gypsum from heavy metals and radionuclides, then immobilizes the hazardous residue. This enables large-scale recycling of phosphogypsum stacks into construction and agricultural products with minimal energy and no aggressive reagents.
Applications
Primary use cases: remediation of legacy phosphogypsum stacks; continuous purification of fresh phosphogypsum; elimination of new storage piles.
Outputs/uses: purified gypsum for drywall, cement/concrete additives; agricultural soil conditioner / fertilizer component.
Industries and users: phosphoric-acid/fertilizer producers, construction-materials makers, waste-management operators.
Scale: modular, scaled to waste volume; designed for millions of tons/year.
Operating Principle
Finely ground phosphogypsum is introduced into a tall vertical column containing a specially engineered high-density aqueous working medium. Particles settle at different rates by density and composition; a transitional density zone forms where purified gypsum accumulates in suspension and is extracted, while uranium, cadmium, and other heavy metals migrate to the column base. Radioactive elements are bound into a compact, stable mass by ARBOK immobilization, minimizing hazardous-residue volume. Continuous, gravity-assisted, low-energy.
Limitations: residue immobilization/disposal; feed grinding; process-medium management.
Key Parameters
Process: water-column density separation with advanced water removal; working medium a specially engineered high-density aqueous solution; continuous, gravity-assisted, minimal energy, no aggressive reagents.
Outputs: purified phosphogypsum (free of heavy metals and radioactivity); immobilized hazardous mass (compact, stable); recovered process water (reused).
Environmental: no emissions, no contaminated wastewater, stacks eliminated, reduced land use.
Process throughput scales with the size and number of installed density-separation columns, and energy demand is limited to feed handling and column operation rather than chemical dosing or thermal input, keeping specific energy consumption low relative to chemical or thermal remediation alternatives.
Architecture and Components
Vertical density-separation column (engineered working medium); purified-gypsum extraction at the transition zone; bottom heavy-metal/radionuclide collection; immobilization unit (stable-mass binding); water recovery loop; control system. Modular, integrable into existing phosphoric plants.
Advantages
Technical: physical-hydrodynamic separation, no chemical washing or vacuum; clean gypsum + concentrated, immobilized hazard.
Economic: converts zero/negative-value waste into saleable construction and agricultural products; cuts storage, monitoring, land, and compliance costs.
Environmental: eliminates open phosphogypsum stacks; prevents soil/groundwater contamination.
Strategic: circular-economy reuse of a massive legacy waste with safe radionuclide handling.
Integrations
Integrates into existing phosphoric-acid sites; pairs with ARBOK acid-recovery (ARBOK-Phosphate) and crystallization; feeds construction-materials and agricultural supply chains.
Deployment & Operation
Steps: phosphogypsum characterization → column/module sizing → install (site or legacy stack) → commissioning. Continuous, gravity-assisted; modular scaling by volume.
TRL
TRL 8 (confirmed by Michael). Validated through industrial trials; safety and environmental compliance confirmed. Remaining to 9: sustained full-scale commercial operation.
Market Potential
Phosphogypsum stacks are one of the largest unresolved industrial-waste problems globally (often radioactive), with tightening rules and strong demand for gypsum in construction and agriculture — a large market at every phosphoric-acid hub and legacy site.
Typical Project Economics
Negative-value waste becomes saleable gypsum (construction + agriculture), while storage, monitoring, land, and compliance costs fall. Designed for profitable processing of millions of tons/year. CAPEX scales with the number and size of density-separation columns required for the target throughput, and payback is driven by the combination of avoided storage/compliance costs and revenue from certified gypsum sales into construction and agricultural markets.
Risk Factors
Radionuclide-residue immobilization/disposal acceptance; gypsum-product certification (construction/agriculture); saline-medium and grinding logistics; conservative industry adoption.
