Overview

ARBOK-Cassava applies the Arbok-TRINITY acid agent to protect cassava — the "hunger insurance" of ~800 million–1 billion people — from its two untreatable viruses: cassava mosaic disease (CMD, 20–95 % yield loss) and cassava brown streak disease (CBSD, rots the root from inside, the worst threat). Both are spread by a single insect, the whitefly Bemisia tabaci, plus infected cuttings. TRINITY drives off the whitefly within 6 hours, pollinator-safe, cutting the main field-infection channel — affordable enough for smallholders, where expensive chemistry is not.

Applications

Area-wide repellent spraying against whitefly during its active season; priority on cutting-propagation sites to stop the virus leaving with planting material; complements the core rule of clean certified cuttings and removal of diseased plants.

Users: cassava smallholders and cooperatives in Africa and SE Asia, national food-security and extension programs.

Operating Principle

The TRINITY chitin-targeting acid mist irritates and drives off the whitefly vector (Bemisia tabaci) within 6 hours without killing bees/pollinators, breaking the CMD/CBSD transmission chain. It hits both the vector and the direct feeding damage. Residual acid buffers in soil/water to safe compounds.

Limitations: viruses are not cured — value is via vector control + sanitation; whitefly is insecticide-resistant (TRINITY's physico-chemical mechanism sidesteps this); cassava-specific field validation pending.

Key Parameters

Agent: Arbok-TRINITY acid solution derived from phosphate-industry waste streams (>6 billion t globally). Whitefly departure: within 6 hours; pollinator-safe; soil-neutralizing. Application: area-wide repellent spray in whitefly season; focus on cutting-propagation plots. Platform production (Arbok-VC): proprietary deep-vacuum route at ambient temperature, low specific energy consumption, zero effluent.

Note: cassava-specific dose/coverage not separately quantified in source beyond the 6-hour drive-off.

Architecture and Components

TRINITY concentrate (from Arbok-VC) → dilution/dosing → ground sprayer / drone repellent application; whitefly-season monitoring; clean-cutting certification and diseased-plant rogueing protocol; PPE/acid handling.

Advantages

Technical: resistance-proof drive-off of a vector that defeats insecticides; pollinator-safe; breaks transmission at the vector and cuttings. Economic: cheap enough for smallholders; far below the cost of a lost field or region-wide epidemic. Environmental: pollinator-safe, soil-buffered, phosphate-waste origin.

Integrations

Application of Arbok-Repeel; fits clean-cutting and IPM programs; complements ARBOK agri platforms; relevant alongside other TRINITY crop cards (bananas, rice, cucurbits).

Deployment & Operation

Area-wide whitefly repellent spraying in season, prioritizing cutting-propagation sites; paired with clean certified cuttings and removal of diseased plants. Provincial/regional scale to limit vector displacement. Remaining: cassava-specific field validation and protocol standardization.

TRL

TRL 5 (confirmed by Michael). Validated in relevant environment at the agent level (TRINITY mechanism proven on other pests), with cassava/whitefly-specific field validation pending.

TRL scale:

  • TRL 1 — basic principles observed
  • TRL 2 — technology concept formulated
  • TRL 3 — experimental proof-of-concept
  • TRL 4 — validated in lab
  • TRL 5 — validated in relevant environment ← ARBOK-Cassava
  • TRL 6 — demonstrated in relevant environment
  • TRL 7 — prototype in operational environment
  • TRL 8 — system complete and qualified
  • TRL 9 — proven in operational environment

Market Potential

Cassava feeds 800 million–1 billion people and is a major starch export (Thailand, Vietnam, Nigeria — the world's largest producer). CMD alone causes an estimated $1–2 billion/year in damage; CBSD threatens East Africa's food security and is spreading west. An affordable, resistance-proof vector repellent — if validated — protects this staple where no cure exists.

Typical Project Economics

Area-wide whitefly repellent costs far less than a lost field or a regional epidemic, and is affordable for poor smallholders unlike conventional chemistry. Agent feedstock is negative-cost phosphate waste. Quantitative per-hectare figures not in source — indicative.

Risk Factors

Viruses not cured — depends on disciplined vector control + clean cuttings + rogueing; lapses negate it. Cassava/whitefly field efficacy needs validation. Vector displacement to untreated plots without area-wide use. Smallholder logistics and PPE/acid handling. Regulatory clearance per region.
