Overview
ARBOK-CHEMILAKE-PURI is a modular platform that turns toxic acidic mine lakes into freshwater and stabilized solids. The acidic, high-TDS water (metals, sulfates, residual reagents) is processed by vacuum phase separation: water evaporates at ambient temperature and condenses clean, while acid, metals, and sulfates remain behind as dry residue that is locked into stable mineral matrices. Where the recovered water must be discharged at neutral pH, an alkali conditioning step can be added. The result is site restoration plus industrial water reuse, even in remote, unregulated zones.
Applications
Primary use cases: neutralization/cleanup of acidic pit lakes and tailings ponds; freshwater recovery for agriculture, hydrology, or dust suppression; ESG/water-restoration offsets.
Industries and users: copper/gold/silver mining, post-mining authorities, environmental remediation.
Scale: modular ARBOK vacuum units; single basin to multi-unit cascades. Reference sites: acidic post-mining pit lakes evaluated in the Mediterranean and in Eastern Europe.
Operating Principle
Acidic mine water (pH < 2.5) is fed to a vacuum chamber; only water evaporates at ambient temperature and condenses to clean water, while metals (Fe, Al, Zn, Cu), sulfates, and acidity concentrate in the residue. The residue is immobilized into concrete-like mineral matrices for dry, isolated deposition. An optional alkali conditioning step, using standard neutralizing agents, sets discharge pH when required. No membranes.
Limitations: highly variable feed chemistry; residue immobilization and siting; alkali supply if neutral discharge is mandated.
Key Parameters
Feed: acid mine drainage / tailings / pit lakes, pH < 2.5 (commonly 1.8–2.5).
Freshwater recovery: 78–85 % from acidic influent.
Energy: 0.7–1.0 kWh per m³ of freshwater (latent-heat recovery).
Waste capture: metals, gypsum, sulfates locked in hardened, non-leachable matrices.
Deployment: units operational within ~4 weeks of site prep.
Architecture and Components
Vacuum-assisted distillation/separation module; condensation/freshwater unit; residue immobilization (mineral-matrix hardening); optional alkali conditioning skid; control system (PLC/automation). Modular, scalable by unit count.
Advantages
Technical: recovers water and locks metals in one vacuum process; no membranes to foul; tolerant of extreme acidity.
Economic: converts a remediation liability into reusable water and stabilized solids; fast 4-week deployment.
Environmental: ZLD-aligned (no liquid discharge); non-leachable metal capture; surface restoration with biocompatible covers.
Strategic: addresses legacy mining liabilities and water reuse in remote zones; ESG/credit potential.
Integrations
Deploys at pit lakes and tailings sites; pairs with ARBOK water/metal-recovery units; SCADA/PLC ready; optional alkali dosing.
Deployment & Operation
Steps: water/volume survey and unit sizing → site prep → module install (~4 weeks) → commissioning. Open-air, ambient temperature. Continuous, automated, minimal staffing.
TRL
TRL 4 (confirmed by Michael). Evidence: site feasibility report at a reference acid-lake site, with defined unit sizing and a validated water/metal-salt separation process on the ARBOK vacuum platform. Remaining: deployed field pilot and permitting.
Market Potential
Tens of thousands of legacy acid-mine sites worldwide carry long-term liability and discharge bans. Drivers: EU Water Framework Directive enforcement, mine-closure obligations, water scarcity in mining regions.
Typical Project Economics
OPEX driven by 0.7–1.0 kWh/m³ energy (plus alkali if neutral discharge required); revenue/savings from recovered water, avoided remediation penalties, and ESG credits. (Per-site CAPEX/payback to be modelled by lake volume and chemistry.)
Risk Factors
Variable feed chemistry; residue classification/siting; alkali supply where neutral discharge is mandated; permitting timelines; needs a deployed reference site.
