Overview
TSM Ceramic (Fire) is the fire-protection variant of the TSM Ceramic family — a thin-layer ceramic coating on hollow nanospheres. At a 1–2 mm working layer it provides 15–60 minutes of passive fire protection on wood frame, gypsum board, polymer panels, EPS, and steel, while also acting as a thermal-insulation barrier. It meets IBC/IRC 2024 1-hour fire requirements at a fraction of the weight, cost, and downtime of classical systems, applied over existing finishes with no demolition.
Applications
WUI single-family housing (California, Florida, Texas, Colorado); multifamily retrofit to 1-hour unit-separation walls; wood rafters/trusses/eaves/soffits; Type X gypsum overcoating; polymer panels, OSB, plywood; steel framing; EPS/ETICS assemblies; garage-to-living walls; electrical cabinets and cable trays.
Users: builders/developers, retrofit contractors, multifamily owners, HOAs, municipalities, insurers (loss control).
Operating Principle
Applied as a thin multi-pass layer that builds a continuous, load-holding lattice across the substrate. Unlike classical systems that resist only conduction, it works against conduction, convection, and radiation: keeps wood below its pyrolysis threshold; dampens early radiation on Type X gypsum so it holds its rating longer; insulates polymer/EPS substrates from melting/ignition; reflects the large majority of incident infrared on steel so frames hold load-bearing capacity longer.
Limitations: U.S. certification (UL 263/ASTM E119) and code acceptance still rolling out (U.S. launch 2026).
Key Parameters
Working layer: 1–2 mm, built up in multiple thin passes. Fire protection: 15–60 min; gives a wood stud 60 min (= double Type X) at a small fraction of the thickness of gypsum or EPS-ETICS systems; +15–30 min on roofs/overhangs. Impact: 50 kg·cm. Linear elongation: 65 % (no settlement/thermal cracking). VOC: 14 g/L (vs 500 allowed). Warranty: 10 years; service life >20 years. Adhesion: metal 1.53 MPa, concrete/wood 1.84 MPa. Bonus: home heat loss −20–30 %.
Architecture and Components
Proprietary patented blend of binder, reinforcing additives, and hollow nanospheres, built up as a multi-pass thin-film lattice; adheres to metal, concrete, wood, brick, gypsum, PVC/acrylic/composite panels, OSB, plywood, plastic, rubber, even cardboard.
Advantages
Technical: three-mode (conduction/convection/radiation) barrier; one product across all substrates; 65 % elongation prevents cracking; very low VOC (residential-safe). Economic: ~$8,000–14,000 vs $30,000–50,000 classical per home; 4–7 days vs 4–6 weeks displacement; multifamily $200k–380k vs $600k–900k. Environmental: ships in few containers vs quarried/kilned/melted classical materials; −20–30 % heat loss bonus.
Integrations
Fire variant of TSM Ceramic; applied over existing finishes (no demolition); compatible with insurance underwriting (FORTIFIED-style discounts, WUI mitigation credits); standard airless spray + roller, one crew.
Deployment & Operation
Ships in buckets/pails; applied by conventional airless spray + roller for cut-ins, built up in multiple thin passes; one crew, one product across substrates; no demolition during retrofit. Production active in EU; U.S. commercial launch 2026.
TRL
TRL 9 (confirmed by Michael). Proven in operational environment: production active in the EU with a commercial product line; U.S. launch (and remaining U.S. code certification) scheduled for 2026. (Source noted TRL 9 EU / TRL 8 U.S.; set to 9 per Michael.)

Market Potential
~4.5 million California WUI homes, 20 million+ U.S. units in elevated fire-risk zones, 21 million apartments under 1-hour IBC requirements. A 5 % addressable pool (~2 million properties) at $15,000–35,000 average savings implies $30–70 billion in freed funds (residential only), against a backdrop of $80B+ recent California wildfire losses and insurer exits.
Typical Project Economics
Home (2,500 ft²): $8,000–14,000 vs $30,000–50,000 classical (savings $18,000–40,000), 4–7 days vs 4–6 weeks. Roof/overhang only: $4,500–7,000. Multifamily (200 units): $200k–380k vs $600k–900k. Insurance: 10–25 % premium reduction → $400–3,500/year, $4,000–35,000 over coating life — often pays for itself on insurance alone.
Risk Factors
U.S. code certification (UL 263, ASTM E119, IBC/IRC 2024, CA/FL codes) still completing — adoption gated on approvals. Fire-rating claims require third-party test validation per assembly. Application quality (two-pass lattice) affects rating. Insurance-discount realization depends on carrier programs. Competes with entrenched gypsum/intumescent/mineral-wool systems.
