Overview
Beryllium costs more per kilogram than most metals on the critical list, and the standard treatment of beryllium-bearing process water is designed to bury it. Lime and flocculant push more than 95% of the beryllium in the stream into a sludge, the sludge is classified as hazardous, and the hazardous sludge goes underground permanently. The plant pays for the reagent, pays for the disposal, and loses the metal in the same operation. ARBOK-Beryllium runs the same stream through deep-vacuum separation at ambient temperature: no lime, no flocculant, no sludge, and the beryllium leaves as a dry concentrate rather than as a liability.
Applications
Beryllium-bearing process wastewater from ore processing, metal and alloy production and machining. Output: a dry beryllium-bearing concentrate, clean process water returned to the cycle, and other metals present in the stream as co-recovered fractions. End uses: aerospace, defence, nuclear and Be-Cu alloy supply chains.
Operating Principle
Water evaporates at ambient temperature under deep vacuum — no heat is supplied, there is no heating circuit and no process setpoint — and condenses as clean water. Beryllium and the other non-volatile metals remain as a compact dry concentrate. Nothing is purchased to make the separation happen, no chemical precipitation occurs, and therefore no hazardous sludge forms.
Key Parameters
| Parameter | Value |
|—|—|
| Process temperature | ambient — no heat supplied, no setpoint |
| Reagents | none |
| Sludge | none formed |
| Output | dry beryllium-bearing concentrate + clean process water |
| Refining to metal grade | separate stage |
Advantages
Removes the reagent line and the hazardous-waste line at once, and converts what was a disposal cost into a recovered material. The water goes back to the process instead of to discharge.
Market Potential
Global refined beryllium output is roughly 220–260 t a year; the US is the largest producer and consumer at about 150–170 t a year, from a single domestic producer in Utah. Metal price is roughly $700–1,500/kg, and aerospace-grade components run higher. Every beryllium metallurgical site running lime-and-flocculant wastewater treatment is a candidate.
